In order to make your joining as simple as possible we have put together some information on the course, what to bring and where to find us.
A comprehensive introduction to chartwork, navigation, meteorology and the basics of seamanship. Invaluable for learning how to start making decisions on board and if you are considering taking the Day Skipper practical course.
Course Duration
The course requires a minimum teaching time of 45 hours and Sailing West delivers the course either as a course of 3 week-ends or a 7 day intensive course.
The Course will be assessed throughout but also has 2 written exams at the end you will have to undertake. The exams are:
1. Chartwork 2. Meteorology 3. Collision Regulations
On Successful completion of the course and the 3 written examinations you will be awarded the RYA Day Skipper Shorebased Certificate.

Additional Items
As part of your course fee you will be issued with a shorebased pack which will contain 2 practice charts, a course notes booklet and a training version of the RYA/Admiralty Electronic Chart Plotter.
You will require, as extras:
1 Portland Course Plotter 1 Set of Dividers Pencils Erasers Paper Pad
Sailing West will provide a laptop computer for use during the session times for the RYA/Admiralty Electronic Chart Plotter to run on. (Ratio 1:3 Students) However it is recommended if you have your own to bring it and use it to run the plotter on during session time and time at home.

Dublin Ireland Tel: +353 (0)12304227 How to get here: By Car Our office is located inside the ferry terminal on the right, opposite the harbour police desk. Coming in from the West (Galway, Limerick, Portlaoise) follow the signs to Dublin until you meet the M50/N81. Then follow the signs directing you to Dun Laoghaire Port with the Stena Line logo on them featuring other towns along the way. Follow the signs for Dun Laoghaire Port. Coming in from the South and South West follow the signs for Dublin. If travelling via Waterford/Kilkenny/Carlow head for the N11 travelling to Dublin and Dun Laoghaire. Then coming to Loughlinstown just past Bray, follow the signs for Dun Laoghaire Port. Coming in from the North West and the North follow the signs to Dublin. Then take the route for the Eastlink Toll bridge and the N11 heading south for Wexford/South East. Keep following the signs for Dun Laoghaire Port. Parking You can park in Dun Laoghaire Harbour each day, you will need to buy a weekly concessionary parking permit from the Harbour Police which are €10/day. Let us know if you require this. By Air The nearest airport to us is Dublin Airport. www.daa.ie From Dublin airport you can choose to take a taxi to Dun Laoghaire or you can get on the "Patton Flyer" which is a bus service that runs to Dun Laoghaire. The timetable is available from www.thepattonflyer.ie By Rail The DART is the train service that runs around Dublin Bay. The Dun Laoghaire DART station is across the road from the Ferry Terminal. Latest Timetables are available from www.irishrail.ie By Ferry Stena Line run a Ferry Service from Holyhead to Dun Laoghaire once a day, seven days a week.
